How to Add Salt to a Water Softener

How To Add Salt to a Water SoftnerYou have finally taken the plunge and installed a water softening system.  Your unit is working away, removing the heavy metal ions you have come to despise, filtering out minerals and leaving your water soft and refreshing. By now you are happily enjoying less scale build up, cleaner clothes and sparkly clean dishes among the many other benefits of soft water. Soon it will be time to add salt to your holding tank to assure that your softener maintains optimal performance.

Luckily, learning how to add salt to a water softener is easy but, there are a few things you should keep in mind:

  • You should keep your tank about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way full at the most.  Filling it any higher will result in clumps and masses of salt.
  • If any masses or lumps do form simply break them up with a broom handle.
  • Make sure that you are using the proper type of salt.  You should never use rock salt; it contains additives that will ruin your unit.  Pellets are preferred for use with most water softening systems.
  • This is a good time to inspect your holding tank for cleanliness. Although they do stay fairly clean for the most part, it doesn’t hurt to keep an eye out for issues.

Adding salt to your water softener is as easy as opening the bag and pouring it in.  Be warned; the bags are very heavy, usually 40lbs.  Be sure that you are capable of lifting this much weight without injury.  Your holding tank will need to be filled every 4-6 weeks depending on your water hardness and use.
